Skorpios

The famous private island!

Skorpios

Skorpios is a small but well-known Ionian island located in the southern mouth of the Alexandros bay of Lefkada

It belongs to the Televoid and Prigkiponisa island complexes. On the northern side of Skorpios is the island of Skorpidi, which belongs to the municipality of Meganisi.

In 1963 Skorpios was sold to the world famous Greek ship-owner Aristotle Onassis. He upgraded the island, bringing generators and drilling wells on it, turning it from a barren place to a paradise of almond trees, wild rose bushes, oleander shrubs, fig trees, lemon trees, orange trees, palm trees, cypresses and pine trees with leaves that reach to the sea, bringing plants from all over the world. It was during that era, when the island was synonymous with luxury, glamor and love. Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Winston Churchill, Prince Renee and Grace Kelly are some of the famous personalities who have visited Skorpios.

On this islet, where today there are very few houses, are the tombs of Aristotle Onassis as well as his son’s Alexander and his daughter’s Christina.

In 2012, the granddaughter of Aristotle Onassis, Athena, sold Skorpios to Russian mogul Dmitry Ribolovlev, who gave it to his daughter as a gift for her birthday.
